With the end of the semester quickly approaching, it seems students are stressing to raise their grades. Students are forced to attend school, be represented by test scores, and grades. Why does the school system focus so much on a letter grade?
Students are sent home with tons of homework, some students have jobs, and have to take care of things at home. To be teens, we have great responsibility in our lives. A survey from Newport Academy states, “An estimated 3.1 million adolescents aged 12 to 17 in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in 2016.” This depression started from anxiety due to school and schoolwork.
Some teachers focus so much on tests, and how their grade is in that class. As you sit in the chair during class going over information all that is asked is, “Will this be on the test?” Some students work so hard, have great participation skills, and amazing determination. However, when they take a test their mind goes blank- and their test score is not the best. Due to this, students become more hard on themselves and get down because they feel as if their not smart.
The school system has it so engraved in our mind that our grade determines our intelligence. People fail to realize that everyone is smart in their own way, everyone has the power to change this world. Grades do not make you a bad student.
I believe that grades should not be a big deal. I feel that if you try, and work hard, you show up to school and class then you deserve an A+. School can be stressful, we need to focus on taking in the content and learning from it, not stressing ourselves about our grades. We are human, we cannot be perfect people or students. Effort goes a long way in the real world.
Schools need to take the time to get to know their kids, colleges need to focus on the student him/herself. The grades should not affect their acceptance, as long as the student has determination, and puts in work, they deserve the chance. So why does the school system focus so much on a letter grade? Why are we represented by a grade? We are all intelligent in our own unique ways, we can work together and change the world.
