The teachers in the Freshman Academy are taking a step back and letting students test their potential and change the world for the better. This semester students will be focusing on social issues they feel need to be addressed. This project requires much dedication and focus to the certain topic the student chooses.
“I think this project is important because it allows our voice to be heard,” said Freshman Shawna West.
Students are required to perform research on their social issue topic. They have to provide background information, statistics, and textual evidence to support the data discovered. This information will be used to write a paper describing why students feel their topic is a problem in this world.
“I am excited to see what my peers are going to do in order to fix the problem,” said Freshman Kathryn Craig.
The second part of this project includes a visual. Students must either build a model, create a skit, or make flyers in order to spread the word about their social issue. Students have been working on this project for a month to provide themselves with crucial information to fully understand their issue.
It is important for students to know that they can change the world and make it a better place. Freshman teachers have been assigning this project for a couple years. Each year, the project has been a huge success! Students are very engaged and take their beliefs very seriously.
